What Is a Body Water Percentage Calculator?

A Body Water Percentage Calculator estimates how much of your body weight may be water. Water is found inside cells, outside cells, in blood, and in many tissues. Total body water can vary by age, gender, muscle mass, body fat, hydration, and activity level.

Body Water Calculator Formula

This calculator uses simplified total body water equations based on age, height, weight, and gender. It then calculates body water percentage by comparing estimated total body water in liters with body weight in kilograms.

Gender Formula Used
Male 2.447 − (0.09156 × age) + (0.1074 × height cm) + (0.3362 × weight kg)
Female −2.097 + (0.1069 × height cm) + (0.2466 × weight kg)

Body Water Percentage Guide

Group General Range
Adult Men Often around 50–65%
Adult Women Often around 45–60%
Higher Muscle Mass May show higher body water percentage
Higher Body Fat May show lower body water percentage

Body Water vs Water Intake

Body water percentage estimates how much of your body is water. Water intake estimates how much fluid you may need to drink daily. These are related, but not the same. A person can have normal body water percentage but still need more fluid during heat, exercise, sweating, or illness.

Why Body Water Percentage Matters

Water supports temperature control, blood volume, digestion, nutrient transport, and normal physical performance. Hydration needs may increase with exercise, hot weather, sweating, high protein intake, creatine use, or low-carb diets.

Signs You May Need More Hydration

  • Dark urine or low urine frequency
  • Dry mouth or thirst
  • Headache after sweating
  • Fatigue during exercise
  • Muscle cramps during hot conditions

Limitations of This Calculator

This calculator gives an estimate only. It does not measure dehydration, fluid retention, kidney function, or electrolyte balance. Body composition scales, lab tests, and clinical assessment may give more specific information.

Body Water Percentage FAQ

Is body water percentage the same as hydration?

No. Body water percentage is an estimate of total water in the body, while hydration status can change daily.

Why do men usually have higher body water percentage?
