FFMI Calculator
Calculate your FFMI, lean body mass, and fat mass using your height, weight, and body fat percentage. This Fat Free Mass Index Calculator helps you understand muscle mass beyond BMI.
Add your height, weight, and body fat percentage to estimate your FFMI.
What Is FFMI?
FFMI stands for Fat Free Mass Index. It is a fitness measurement that compares your lean body mass with your height. Unlike BMI, which only uses total body weight, FFMI considers how much of your weight is lean mass instead of fat mass.
FFMI Formula
This calculator first estimates lean body mass, then divides it by height squared in meters. The formula is: FFMI = lean body mass ÷ height².
| Step | Formula |
|---|---|
| Lean Body Mass | Weight × (1 − body fat percentage) |
| Fat Mass | Weight − lean body mass |
| FFMI | Lean body mass ÷ height² in meters |
FFMI vs BMI
BMI can label muscular people as overweight because it does not separate fat mass from lean mass. FFMI gives a clearer view for people who train because it uses lean body mass. This makes FFMI especially useful for gym users, athletes, and people tracking muscle gain.
FFMI Categories
| Category | Male FFMI | Female FFMI |
|---|---|---|
| Below Average | Below 18 | Below 15 |
| Average | 18–20 | 15–17 |
| Fit | 20–22 | 17–19 |
| Athletic | 22–25 | 19–22 |
| Very Muscular | 25+ | 22+ |
Natural FFMI Limits
FFMI is often discussed in bodybuilding and fitness because very high values may suggest unusually high muscularity. However, genetics, training age, body fat measurement accuracy, height, and sport background all affect results. FFMI should be used as a guide, not a final judgment.
FFMI For Men
Men often have higher FFMI ranges because average lean mass is usually higher. A male FFMI around the fit or athletic range may suggest strong muscular development, especially when body fat is moderate or low.
FFMI For Women
Women usually have different FFMI ranges due to natural body composition differences. A female FFMI in the fit or athletic range can indicate strong lean mass relative to height.
How To Improve FFMI
FFMI may improve when lean body mass increases. Common strategies include progressive strength training, enough protein, sufficient calories for muscle gain, good sleep, and consistent recovery. Creatine and protein intake are also common topics for people focused on lean mass.
Limitations of This Calculator
FFMI depends heavily on body fat percentage accuracy. If your body fat estimate is wrong, your FFMI result will also be wrong. Skinfolds, smart scales, DEXA scans, and visual estimates can all produce different results.
FFMI Calculator FAQ
Is FFMI better than BMI?
FFMI can be more useful for people who train because it considers lean mass, while BMI only uses total weight and height.
What is a good FFMI?
A good FFMI depends on gender, training experience, and body composition. Fit and athletic ranges usually suggest above-average lean mass.
Can FFMI increase?
Yes. FFMI can increase if you gain lean body mass through strength training, protein intake, and recovery.
Why does body fat percentage matter?
FFMI uses lean body mass, so body fat percentage is needed to separate fat mass from fat-free mass.
