What Is Waist Hip Ratio?

Waist hip ratio, or WHR, compares your waist measurement with your hip measurement. It is a simple body measurement tool used to estimate fat distribution and general health risk related to abdominal fat.

Waist Hip Ratio Formula

The formula is simple: Waist Hip Ratio = Waist Circumference ÷ Hip Circumference. For example, if your waist is 85 cm and your hip is 100 cm, your WHR is 0.85.

Measurement Meaning
Waist Measurement around the narrowest part of the waist or around belly button level.
Hip Measurement around the widest part of the hips or buttocks.
WHR Waist measurement divided by hip measurement.

Waist Hip Ratio Categories

Gender Low Risk Moderate Risk High Risk
Men Below 0.90 0.90–0.99 1.00 and above
Women Below 0.80 0.80–0.84 0.85 and above

Waist Hip Ratio For Men

For men, a waist-to-hip ratio below 0.90 is commonly considered a lower-risk range. A higher WHR may suggest more abdominal fat relative to hip size.

Waist Hip Ratio For Women

For women, a waist-to-hip ratio below 0.80 is commonly considered a lower-risk range. A WHR of 0.85 or higher may suggest higher central fat distribution.

WHR vs BMI

BMI compares weight with height, while WHR compares waist with hip size. BMI does not show where body fat is stored, but WHR gives more insight into abdominal fat distribution.

WHR vs Waist-to-Height Ratio

Waist-to-height ratio compares waist size with height. Waist hip ratio compares waist size with hip size. Both tools can be useful because they measure different aspects of body shape and abdominal fat.

How To Measure Waist and Hip

  • Use a soft measuring tape.
  • Keep the tape level and not too tight.
  • Measure waist after breathing out normally.
  • Measure hips around the widest part.
  • Use the same unit for both measurements.

How To Improve Waist Hip Ratio

Waist hip ratio may improve with fat loss, better food quality, regular exercise, strength training, improved sleep, and consistent daily activity. Spot reduction is not realistic, so overall fat loss habits matter more.

Limitations of This Calculator

WHR is only a screening estimate. It does not measure body fat percentage, muscle mass, visceral fat directly, or medical risk by itself. Use it together with other tools such as BMI, waist-to-height ratio, and body fat estimators.

Waist Hip Ratio FAQ

What is a good waist hip ratio?

A commonly used lower-risk range is below 0.90 for men and below 0.80 for women.

Is WHR better than BMI?

WHR and BMI measure different things. WHR shows fat distribution, while BMI compares weight with height.

Can waist hip ratio change?

Yes. WHR can change with fat loss, muscle gain, body composition changes, and measurement consistency.

Should I use cm or inches?

Either is fine as long as both waist and hip measurements use the same unit.
